The Mississippi River has been getting a lot of press lately as the spring rains have been threatening to flood.  Take a look at the graphs here of Minneapolis and Saint Paul River levels:

Saint Paul is MUCH higher than Minneapolis.  Anyone know why?  We have a feeling it might have something to do with the Minnesota River and the lack of Lock and Dam’s controlling the levels…

Everyone attempting to recreate on the Mississippi River should use heightened caution.  We have been paddling for many years and know the safest routes, which are always very fast in the spring due to the strong currents.  Take a look at the pictures from our trip last weekend.  The Minneapolis Route was not as dangerous as last year as many large trees were caught on bridges, causing dangerous obstructions.  But be warned, the river can change overnight!
